New Topic Focus for the Climate Enterprise Award 2025

We are excited to announce the new topic focus for the 2025 Climate Enterprise Award: recycling small electrical items.

What Are Small Electrical Items?

Small electrical items include everyday gadgets such as:

  • Mobile phones
  • Hairdryers
  • Electric toothbrushes
  • Remote controls
  • Cables and chargers
  • Laptops and tablets

Unfortunately, many of these items are often discarded improperly, contributing to the growing issue of e-waste. Recycling these items is crucial to preserving valuable materials and reducing environmental damage.

Empowering Students to Inspire Change

This year, the Climate Enterprise Award is inviting students to come up with creative project ideas to help their local community recycle small electrical items. Their project ideas should aim to raise awareness, inspire action, and provide practical solutions for recycling small electrical items in West Sussex. Whether they work individually or in groups, we want students to think creatively about how to engage their local communities and make a real impact.

The best idea will receive a £500 grant to help bring it to life, plus mentoring sessions with experts in areas like social media, communications, and recycling.

Entries can be submitted as:

  • 5-slide presentation
  • 2-sided A4 proposal
  • 30-second video

Submission Deadline: Monday, 31st March 2025

How Does It Work?

It’s up to you how you integrate the Climate Enterprise Award into your school—whether through geography or science lessons, Eco Club sessions, or as part of a themed subject or environmental weeks. To help you get the most out of the award, we’ve created a lesson that sets the context for students by linking waste to climate change, while also focusing on electrical recycling, the key area of this year’s award. Students will understand the importance of recycling small electrical items and why their innovative ideas are crucial in addressing this issue. The resources then guide students through a structured process, helping them brainstorm, develop, and refine their winning idea!

Support for Schools

To help kick-start the award, we’re offering free sessions to West Sussex secondary schools where a member of our team will come into your school to teach students about the award and guide them in creating their submissions.

The Climate Enterprise Award is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn, make a positive impact, and engage with their community. We look forward to seeing their creativity in action!
