Kingsham Primary School – Leading the Way in Waste Reduction

Kingsham Primary School has set a benchmark for sustainability by achieving Ambassador status in the West Sussex Planet Protector Challenge for 2023-24. Through student-led initiatives and community engagement, the school has successfully embedded sustainability into daily school life.

Key Achievements

  • Energy Savings: Reduced energy use by 192 kWh, saving £65.28 and cutting 17 kg of carbon emissions.
  • Food Waste Reduction: Prevented 204 kg of food waste, redistributing fresh food through UK Harvest.
  • Recycling Success:
    • Recycled 14 kg of batteries, earning £30 in book vouchers.
    • Collected 147 kg of textiles, generating funds for the school.
    • Hosted a toy swap and tombola, raising £75 and encouraging reuse.
  • Community Impact:
    • Diverted 243 pieces of litter from the local environment.
    • Hosted a Recycle It Right assembly with West Sussex County Council, ensuring students understand local recycling guidelines.
  • Water Conservation: Saved 1,885 litres of water through student-led conservation efforts.
  • Rewards and Recognition: Achieved Ambassador School status, doubling their recycling rewards and earning an additional £230.

Kingsham used the Planet Protector Challenge to structure its sustainability efforts, engage students, and track its impact using the Eco-Savings Account. Resources like assembly packs, stickers, and lesson plans helped reinforce sustainability messages across the school.
